Santas for Soldiers: Initiative aimed at gifts for Armenian army border units

A group of Armenian young adults has initiated “Gifts for Soldiers”, a fundraising-campaign to raise money for preparing holiday presents for conscripts of the border military units of Armenia’s Armed Forces.

The group is made up of economists, lawyers, journalists of age 20-25, some of whom have served their military obligation.

“There is not a single family in Armenia which has not this or that way participated in the defense of our homeland,” says the group’s founding statement.

Ashot Poghosyan, member of the initiative group, told ArmeniaNow that they sent solicitation letters to 200 businessmen, and informed the Ministry of Defense of Armenia about their initiative.

“There are military units especially in Nagorno-Karabakh, where conscripts do not have a means of communication during their whole service, except for their one-week leave. This will be a pleasant surprise for the conscripts serving in border military units,” Poghosyan says.

A current account is opened for the campaign with Ararat Bank (www.araratbank.am) to make money transfers by dram, Euro, and dollar from any part of the world. Contributions can be made at: 1510007752300100 (AMD), 1510007752300101 (US dollar), 1510007752300149 (Euro).

The current account is opened through December 22. Poghosyan says that they have not got any response from Armenian businessmen; however, till the end of the campaign they will buy sweets, CD players and CDs, as well as other objects that are not banned by the internal service regulations of the Armed Forces of Armenia, for conscripts, as funds allow.
