Hrachik Javakhyan (w.c. 64 kg) has brought Armenia a boxing gold medal at the European championships in Moscow, Russia, that ended this past weekend.

In the final on Saturday Javakhyan beat a Hungarian rival on points 3-2 to take the continent’s title.

Glendale professional boxer Vanes Martirosyan has improved to 28-0, with 17 wins coming by way of knockout, after a Saturday victory in his debut HBO undercard bout versus undefeated prospect Joe Greene (22-1, 14 KOs).

Martirosyan, a 24-year-old native of Abovyan in Armenia dubbed “The Nightmare”, fought a 10-rounder at New York’s Yankee Stadium against “Mean” Greene and won with a unanimous decision to retain his NABF/NABO (North American Boxing Federation/North American Boxing Organization) welterweight titles. The official scores in the fight broadcast by HBO were 96-93, 96-93 and 98-91.

As he often does after big fights, boxing champion Vic Darchinyan came home to Armenia where he met media today (June 4) after his May victory over Filipino Eric Barcelona in Australia.

The “Raging Bull” Darchinyan – WBC/WBA – super flyweight champion was greeted with champagne in his home country from which he took his skills to Australia and on to a 35 wins, 2 losses, 1 draw career so far.

WBC/WBA super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan (35-2-1, 27 KOs) stepped up to bantamweight to take the vacant IBO bantamweight belt against Eric Barcelona (51-18-4, 19 KOs) on Thursday night at the Leagues Club in Parramatta, Australia.

Darchinyan dropped the tough Filipino three times en route to a 120-103, 118-105 and 116-108 win. Barcelona who has never been knocked out was also deducted two points from low blows.

Undefeated Armenian prizefighter Susi Kentikian gained the upper hand over a previously unbeaten competitor in a tense bout on Saturday to retain her three belts and extend her unbeaten record in professional boxing to 27 fights.

According to a report in German newspaper Bild, Sauerland Event, promoters for Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KO’s), have officially protested the fighter’s disqualification loss to Andre Dirrell.

DETROIT -- Andre Dirrell beat Arthur Abraham on a disqualification for an intentional foul at 1:13 of the 11th round on Saturday night in the second stage of the Super Six World Boxing Classic.

Dirrell (19-1) slipped when he was hit by a glancing blow to the chin in the corner. While Dirrell was sitting down, Abraham hit him across the chin with a right hand and Dirrell couldn't continue.

A veteran Armenian boxing champ said he was going to raise the stakes by moving to a higher division or seek a rematch with a longtime Filipino foe after he defended his WBC/WBA super flyweight belts against a Mexican challenger Saturday night.

Vic Darchinyan (34-2-1. 27 KOs) looked solid against his younger challenger from Mexico Rodrigo Guerrero (13-2-1, 9 KO) throughout the 12-round bout at the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, California, especially towards the end when the southpaw gave the 22-year-old “Gatito” a series of slashing lefts and uppercuts leading to a commanding unanimous decision.
