WGM Maria Kursova has won Armenia’s national chess championship among women less than half a year after joining the Armenian chess federation.
Kursova, 26, from Russia, came to Armenia for permanent residence last year after marrying one of the country’s leading grandmasters Arman Pashikyan. She became affiliated with the local chess federation and started to represent Armenia at international competitions beginning last September.
At the national championship that ended on Sunday Kursova finished on top of the standings among 11 participants, with 9 points. Anna Hairapetian and Evgeniya Doluhanova won the silver and bronze with 8.5 and 6.5 points, respectively.
Grandmaster Tigran Petrosyan became Armenia’s champion among men with 7 points. Robert Hovhannisyan and Samvel Ter-Sahakyan finished second and third, with 6.5 and 6 points, respectively.
