Olympics: Four athletes to represent Armenia in Vancouver
Srgey Mikaelyan, from Ashotsk and Kristine Khachatryan, Gyumri, will compete in sprint and cross country events. American-Armenian (from California) Ani-Matilda Serebrakian and Arsen Nersisyan (Tsakhkadzor) will compete in alpine skiing slalom events. Armenian figure-skaters, who represented Armenia in the 2006 Winter Games, failed to qualify this year. The Vancouver Games will be the fifth for Team Armenia in Winter Olympics. Since 1994 Armenia has fielded a small team, but has failed to produce any medal winners. At the last winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, in 2006, Armenia was represented by five athletes (two cross-country skiers and one alpine skier, and a pair of ice dancers), who all had unsuccessful performances, especially the cross-country skiers who came in last and next to last. Armenia had the largest delegation of sportsmen, nine, at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, USA. More updates on Team Armenia’s preparations for the Winter Olympics will be available on the NOCA’s official website www.armnoc.am.
