Two Armenian clubs representing provinces entertained rivals from Yerevan in the first legs of Cup semifinals played at the weekend.
On March 17, playing at home, Impuls Dilijan beat the 2011 Season’s champions Ulis 2-1, while the following day Shirak Gyumri, as the host team, lost to Mika 0-1.
The second-leg semifinal matches are scheduled for April 11-12. The Cup final is due to be played at Gyumri’s reconstructed City Stadium on April 29.
Meanwhile, the eight-team Armenian Premier League this year will start on March 24 and will be played through next year’s May – all in all, 42 rounds, the teams playing each other six times (on a home and away basis). The same change also applies to the first division of the Armenian championship. Thus, Armenia makes a transition to the autumn-spring championship model widely used in Europe.
