Police Storm Liberty Square: Ter-Petrosyan supporters beaten, reports of injuries

Sometime around 7:30 this morning (Saturday, March 1), Armenian special forces stormed Liberty Square in central Yerevan, breaking up the protest encampment set up by followers of Levon Ter-Petrosyan who is contesting results of the February 19 presidential election.

By 8:15 the block encompassing the Opera House was surrounded by police in riot gear, by “red beret” interior forces and by camouflage wearing men with black stocking caps covering their faces and carrying automatic weapons. All was quiet, as the remnants of the site littered the area that had held some 60 tents and an unknown number of demonstrators.
